A Little Neat Moment

President Obama goes to shake hand of military officer, officer salutes, President returns it then shakes hand.

Minutes later in the limo as they drive off camera catches him practicing a salute.  Reminds me of the days I learned to properly salute.  Think of how much on the job training he has in front of him…

We were at friends for dinner this weekend.  C has multiple stringed instruments — one of which was a mountain dulcimer.  I tried tuning a banjo, unsuccessfully.  He then brought the dulcimer.  I couldn’t stop playing it.  It might be one of the few strings I can play (maybe  not master).

I Can’t Stop Watching

Working on the Railroad

My daughter got some little picture books for Christmas with some familiar songs and rhymes.  There is a shortened verison of “Working on the Railroad” that I’m just not sure how is supposed to be sung.  In my searches for the song I came across the above Rooftop Singers performance.  For some reason I keep playing this over and over.  The highlight — when Lynne Taylor comes in huskily for the fee fi fo part.

Life is but a dream…

This makes me think of this.

Following the logic flows — I wonder if the “now” of this simulation we exist in is in our future or past.  Does that make sense?  If I were running a simulation of the world I’d have the rate quite a bit higher than time elapsing in my own world.

Further, if there is high probability we live in a simulation, doesn’t that same probability apply to our simulator’s world?  A nested doll of simulated simulations.

I’m Still Doing the Rain Dance

Cloud computing isn’t going to dominate the tech landscape, but will raise a ruckus for software vendors. Google and Amazon will be cloud computing winners, but the spoils will be relatively small. And there’s a race to deliver a cloud developer stack for both consumers and enterprise customers.

Handicapping cloud computing: The big picture | Between the Lines | ZDNet.com.

I don’t agree with the takeaways.  They may not dominate the landscape as currently configured (might be new players and/or new manifestations), but I’ve had too many business models that are workable ONLY because of the cloud…

Got My Bold

Just arrived today.  Man the screen is amazing.  Crisp colors and high resolution.  I now have 3 RIM handhelds.  Will carry the Pearl and the Bold.  Don’t ask while I still carry two…  more driven by my love/hate for email + work and not by the devices.
